Welcome to Manic Musings by me, St Gothica, Synchronicity Wave Traveler. I’m 5’3”, dark skinned, a graduate and I have no idea who I am.
Seriously though, I had a lecturer at university who always started classes for a particular course by asking us to write about ourselves. It threw the class into a state of complete confusion, largely because the last time most of us had to answer that question (in essay form) was in primary school when the answers were so much simpler. We were our hair, our skin, our favourite meal but now we know India Arie was right and we are none of these things. Who then are we?
I find it unfortunate that a lot of my contemporaries choose to define themselves by what is in fact just a facet of their personality. Take a woman who identifies as a feminist or a man who identifies as politically conservative, who then proceed to process everything through the filter of feminism or political conservativeness.
The saying goes “Jack of all trades, master of none… is greater than a master of one”. Humans are multidimensional beings and I believe that people lacking understanding of their unique abilities, ergo stifling them, is responsible for several societal ills.
To quote Robert A. Heinlein:
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
I have come to the realization that we have the freedom to be whomever we want to be in as many ways as we want to be it at any given time. As someone I respect a lot once said, “Authenticity is not Consistency”. It’s about time that we strive to be our truest, most authentic self and accept that self for the dynamic being you truly are.
On that note, I may have no idea who I am right now but I plan to have a hell of a time finding out. I hope you’ll be along for the journey, all you have to do is subscribe.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
Peace and Namaste.
